BEING PREPARED for Day Hikes
Weather changes in the mountains can come quickly, so it is important to be prepared.
Following are some tips to help you plan for our time together on the trail.
* Please keep in mind that the weather in the Smokies is quite changeable and we can experience rain any time of the year.
* Temperatures at the higher elevations can be 10 – 20 degrees colder than those experienced at the lower elevations.
To enjoy a safe and comfortable day you should:
Always carry waterproof rain protection (a poncho or rain jacket & rain pants).
Wear sturdy, broken-in hiking boots (or comfortable walking shoes) .
Dress in layers.
Bring plenty of Water.
Bring snacks and your lunch for a trail-side picnic.
A cap or hat with a brim is a good idea too
Hiking poles if you have them
Optional items that I recommend you bring are camera and binoculars (I always carry a pair that you are welcome to use).
